Genesis Chapter 4

Enos

You might not be able to see the wood for the trees in this chapter. Adam and Eve had two sons, Cain and Abel. Cain was bright, alert, capable, gifted, quick brained, hard working and friendly, and I am sure that his parents were very proud of him and gave him all that he wanted.

Abel (heb - 'Come to nothing') was not bright, not alert, dull and introverted, with very little confidence in himself. They gave him a job of looking after the sheep.

In an effort to get to know GOD, Cain took a gift to the entrance of the Garden of Eden....The best of his efforts, the best of his crops, but God did not want them, and Cain was hurt. When Abel heard of it he took a lamb to God. God was delighted and accepted it with greatful thanks. In the one thing that mattered the half-wit Abel had outdone Cain. So Cain killed Abel. (Christians bring the Lamb to God, today, and He is delighted. Non Christians bring their efforts and they are rejected).

Time went by and the descendants of Cain were bright, alert, capable, quick brained, hard working and friendly, and the women were beautiful. One of the men killed another, and made a song about it, about how he could not be punished for his crime. Adam and Eve were disgusted by the crime and the song, and they conceived and had another son, Seth, because they wanted another Abel.

The Bible does not mention that son, much, but seems to be more concerned about Enos, the son of Seth. It says that when Enos was born, ‘then began man to call upon the name of the Lord’.

The meaning of Enos is ‘Man’, but it is used in the Hebrew language to denote a weak, stupid, brainless, effeminate man, not capable of anything to be proud of.
"What is man that Thou art mindful of him" (Psalm 8 verse 4)
"How much less is man, a worm" (Job 25 verse 6)
"He smote the men of the city" (1 Samuel 6 verse 19)
"They smote the men" ( Genesis 19 verse 11)

The word for ‘man’ and ‘men’ in these verses in Hebrew is ‘Enos’. Adam and Eve were given another Abel. He was not clever, and because he was a failure, and like Abel, he did the most important thing of all, and what, apparently, had not been done before, he called upon the name of the Lord, to help him.

To be precise, The name ‘Enos’ is not the word for ‘man’, in Hebrew, even though it means ‘man’. The Hebrew word has had an ‘H’ added, and is ‘Enosh’. Watch out for these ‘H’s. They are significant, and seem to denote the blessing of God. (‘H’ seems to be a symbol of the breath of God and is the fifth letter of the Hebrew alphabet). Abram had his name changed to AbraHam, and Sarai had her name changed to SaraH.

There are two men named Enosh in Genesis. Jude tells us that Enosh prophecied but that was the other Enosh.
